Premier League explain why Chelsea were denied penalty for foul on Azpilicueta
Chelsea were denied a clear penalty in the goalless draw against Manchester United on Saturday despite Cesar Azpilicueta being manhandled by Harry Maguire in the United box.
Martin Atkinson didn’t give a penalty for the incident and Stuart Attwell, who was the VAR official, also refused to call the referee’s attention to the incident.
A statement from the PGMOL and the Premier League has now explained why Chelsea were denied a penalty against Manchester United.
According to the PGMOL, Chelsea were denied a penalty for the foul on Azpilicueta because it was not a clear and obvious error.
Former Premier League referee Mark Halsey insists he is surprised by the statement from PGMOL and the Premier League.
Halsey said: “I am bemused by that statement.
“VAR is simple for me. The IFAB protocol is: was that incident a clear and obvious error? One word, in capital letters. YES.”
