‘I don’t want him as my top scorer! Tuchel reveals why he does not want Chelsea player as top scorer this season
Chelsea midfielder Jorginho topped Chelsea’s goalscoring charts in the Premier League with seven goals last season (all penalties), and he was followed by Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, and Timo Werner with six each.
This season, Romelu Lukaku has scored three goals already and is top of Chelsea’s scoring charts along with Mount who bagged a hat-trick against Norwich.
For all of Chelsea’s goals in the Premier League this season (23), Chelsea’s goalscorers have been spread evenly from attack to defence, compared to the likes of Liverpool whose scorers are mostly their attackers.
Although Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has admitted he’s pleased with the goalscoring threat of his defenders, he wants his strikers to bang in the goals and not last season’s top scorer in Jorginho.
“It’s good, we want to be stronger in set-pieces than the last half a year,” the German told Chelsea TV on having a lot of goalscoring defenders in his team.
“Maybe at the moment, we have [a lot of] defenders in the box [during set-piece situations], and maybe we need a little bit of luck to continue our streak like this.
“Anthony [Barry] is working with his team at the highest level on set-pieces to have variations and be decisive every game.
“We’re happy about it. It’s a good sign that we can score from any position and be dangerous at any moment of the game.
“Still, in the end, you want your strikers to be the top scorers, not Jorginho again from the penalty spots.”
