Todd Boehly to complete failed £43m Chelsea transfer deadline in January as player wants Stamford Bridge move
With Chelsea planning to resume talks, Todd Boehly can complete the attempted Deadline Day deal of Edson Alvarez from Ajax in January.
Despite Ajax’s refusal to let the Mexican player go on Deadline Day, Alvarez is reportedly still interested in a move to Stamford Bridge.
However, Chelsea247.com has learned that Chelsea made a £43 million offer for Edson Alvarez after keeping tabs on the 24-year-old during the summer transfer season.
Chelsea tried to sign Alvarez before the transfer window closed, but were unsuccessful, so they switched their attention to obtaining a loan move for Juventus midfielder Denis Zakaria. The Mexican international took extreme measures by failing to show up for first team practice, much like Antony did before agreeing to an £85 million transfer to Manchester United. He will now have to wait until January to find out if the Blues are still interested in signing him.
Speaking on the Kick Off Football podcast, Dutch journalist Mike Verwejj later disclosed that Alvarez is exclusively interested in joining Chelsea. The Blues and the Eredivisie champions are expected to resume negotiations “in the following days.”
Verwejj said: “Now he just wants to make that transfer to Chelsea. If there is a club that has 50million for you and wants to give you €10million net per year, he really wanted to go. He was quite broken.”
Thomas Tuchel was keen to add a new midfielder to his squad with Chelsea having pursued a deal to sign Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong. Injuries to the likes of N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic left the Blues with minimal options in midfield, but a deal for De Jong proved too difficult.
“A winter transfer is one of the possibilities. In the coming days, that will be discussed with Chelsea,” Verwejj continued when discussing Alvarez’s future. Since Zakaria’s move to Chelsea is just a season-long loan deal, and with a busy second half to the season expected after the 2022 World Cup, the Blues may return to secure a deal for the Mexican to add further depth to an injury prone area of the squad, especially with deals for Kante and Jorginho running out next summer.
