BREAKING: Chelsea set to announce German man as new technical director in coming days
Following his departure from RB Leipzig, where he served in the same capacity, Christopher Vivell is expected to be named Chelsea’s next technical director, according to football london.
Following the American’s £4 billion takeover at Stamford Bridge, Marino Granovskaia and Petr Cech resigned their positions, and Todd Boehly has been looking for a new technical director to add to the Blues hierarchy. Vivell quit his position with the Bundesliga club, Leipzig said on Friday in the afternoon, citing “contrasting opinions.”
Boehly tried to negotiate with people like former Red Bull Salzburg CEO Christoph Freund and former Liverpool director Michael Edwards, but such efforts were fruitless. As he continues to make significant changes behind the scenes to align with his long-term vision for the Blues, the American owner has now been able to add a crucial member to the board of directors.
However, The hiring of Vivell is in keeping with Boehly’s plan to imitate Red Bull’s multi-club model, which could see the American owner invest in other teams across the world, enhancing Chelsea’s image internationally and enabling the club to find talented players on various continents. The Blues’ pursuit of Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku and Josko Gvardiol may also benefit from it, since the former has reportedly already signed a pre-contractual agreement with Chelsea, according to football.london.
RB Leipzig released a statement on Vivell’s departure on Friday afternoon, which read: “Christopher Vivell was dismissed from his position as technical Director yesterday (Thursday) with immediate effect, due to differences of opinion. The 35-year-old’s duties will be carried out by the current set-up, until Max Eberl takes over as the new Managing Director of Sport.”
Vivell’s appointment is unlikely to be the last appointment as part of a restructure in the Chelsea recruitment team as Boehly looks to strengthen the backroom staff at Stamford Bridge. The Blues are expecting to be one of the busiest clubs in the summer transfer window again next year, after spending more than any other Premier League club in Boehly’s first summer as owner, with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Nkunku, Gvardiol, Declan Rice and Frenkie de Jong thought to be on the club’s radar.
