‘l’m telling you is going to be a great player for Chelsea ’… Gary Lineker amazed by 20-year-old attacker Chelsea want to sign
Gary Lineker has been speaking about Bayer Leverkusen attacker Florian Wirtz, who has been linked to Chelsea and several other big clubs.
Florian Wirtz has been in exceptional form for Leverkusen this season, and a report from the Daily Star in November claimed that the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Bayern Munich are all in the queue to sign him.
And now Gary Lineker, speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, has praised the young German.
Wirtz has come up with 12 goal contributions in 18 Bundesliga appearances this term, which is impressive.
It is why Leverkusen value him so highly, with it being reported that it could cost more than £112m to get him out of the BayArena.
Gary Lineker amazed by Florian Wirtz’s talent
If Chelsea do go on to land Wirtz, it looks like Lineker is one person who would back the signing.
On the attacking midfielder, the pundit said: “Have you seen much of Florian Wirtz? 20-year-old German, he plays high up on the left-hand side. He is going to be a player, I’m telling you. I have seen him play a few times now and he has got so much talent. I really like him.
“I think he has played 18 times for the German national team. He looks a little bit special to me. Certainly one to look out for in the Euros this summer as well as this particular season.”
Florian Wirtz is special
Wirtz is indeed a very talented player. He is putting up good numbers for a player his age, is a dangerous dribbler and is already a Germany international.
According to WhoScored, Wirtz is making 2.7 dribbles per game in the Bundesliga this season, which is the highest average in Xabi Alonso’s squad.
He is also second for key passes, recording an average of 2.2.
The above does not make Wirtz a £100m player. But with the trajectory the Leverkusen star is on, he may very well be worth that one day. It is no surprise, then, that Chelsea want to snap him up.
