On Wednesday morning, shortly after Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League match on Tuesday, Thomas Tuchel was fired as manager of the club.
In the match against Dinamo Zagreb, Pulisic came on as a substitute, like he has done for the majority of the season.
To the dismay of the American star, the 23-year-old American also played a larger role as a substitute last season.
According to USA head coach Gregg Berhalter, Thomas Tuchel’s dismissal from Chelsea may be advantageous for Pulisic, who struggled to earn starting positions under Tuchel.
Before the World Cup later this year, Berhalter sees this as a chance for his captain.
“I’m not happy a guy lost his job. But if this means more opportunity for Christian, then it’s positive because he’s a guy that’s proven that he can perform at that level,” Berhalter said.
“We’ll just have to wait and see.”
Even if Graham Potter decides not to feature Pulisic regularly, Pulisic would still play a key role for America in the World Cup.
“I’m sure there’s not going to be anything drastic, but there may be a couple of guys that pop up,” Berhalter said of the squad he is planning to take to Qatar.
“If someone gets injured and they can’t go on that day, we’ll be ready with alternates.”
