The Blues reportedly believe the Napoli striker can be signed for £6 million, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.
However, Chelsea’s interest in signing Belgium international Dries Mertens has been confirmed by top Belgian journalist Kristof Terreur.
According to Terreur, Chelsea will have to convince Napoli to sell the striker this January and also convince the player to leave Italy for England.
“I think chances are slim at the moment, but you can’t exclude anything,” Terreur tweeted.
“Chelsea will have to convince Napoli and will have to convince him.
It was not that he was actively chasing a move – becoming all time club top scorer in mind.”
