Napoli forward Dries Mertens turned down a January move to Stamford Bridge, with the Belgian international not willing to leave the Italian club as he was close to becoming the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Following his goal against Sampdoria over the weekend, Mertens is just two goals short of Marek Hamsik’s record of 121.

According to Italian media outlet Corriere dello Sport, Mertens has rejected Napoli’s offer of a two-year extension, with the forward wanting more guarantees for an ‘ambitious future’.

Despite turning down a January move to Chelsea, the Blues are reportedly monitoring his situation at Napoli and are considering a summer move for the attacker.

Mertens has scored 10 goals and registered 4 assists in 23 games for Napoli this season, including 5 goals and an assist in 6 Champions League matches.
