Chelsea appear to have broadened their horizons in the search for a new centre-back.
Daniele Rugani has been considered Maurizio Sarri’s prime target to strengthen his back-line this summer.
Sarri worked alongside Rugani during their time at Empoli. He’s a player that he knows well, and has appeared keen on reuniting with him this summer.
In recent days, the proposed transfer fee for Rugani has gone up and up, settling around the £45M mark. That’s a hell of a lot for a defender who would be, make no mistake, a risk.
It comes as no surprise that Chelsea are exploring alternatives. We have been knocked back once again in our efforts, however.
According to Sky Italy’s Angelo Mangiante, Chelsea offered €30M for Juventus centre-back Mattia Caldara, a bid that was rejected by the Serie A champions.
Caldara impressed out on-loan with Atalanta last season. That appears to have sky-rocketed his price-tag. Chelsea will have to cough up the cash.
