Chelsea make decision over Maurizio Sarri’s assistant Marco Ianni after Jose Mourinho spat

CHELSEA have decided to leave Marco Ianni’s fate up to manager Maurizio Sarri.

The club are not happy with the coach for his taunting of Jose Mourinho on Saturday.

Manchester United’s manager was celebrated in front of twice by Ianni after Ross Barkley bagged a 96th-minute equaliser in the 2-2 draw.

Mourinho was eventually provoked into a reaction as he chased Ianni towards the tunnel.

Referee Mike Dean did not deliver any punishment to either club’s camp for the touchline incident.

But he did include it in his match report which the FA will now look at before deciding on whether anyone deserves to be charged.

Starsport understands Chelsea are furious with Ianni and he now faces the prospect of a club fine as well as a potential FA punishment.

However, internally, Sky Sports say the Blues will allow Sarri to personally handle any disciplinary action against his assistant coach.

After the game once the Chelsea manager had realised what had happened, he took Ianni to speak with Mourinho behind closed doors where the assistant apologised for his actions.

The club are said to deem the incident as falling way below the standards expected of their staff.

But they will not override whatever action Sarri deems appropriate, Sky Sports add.

Ianni and Sarri are close having worked together before they teamed up at Chelsea this summer.

anni spent two years as Sarri’s technical assistant at Napoli.

His role at Stamford Bridge is now the manager’s second assistant coach involved more heavily in analysis.

He is expected to be in the dugout again on Thursday, though, when Chelsea return to action in the Europa League at home to BATE Borisov.
