Chelsea to let £110k-a-week player to go but don’t want to disrespect him

Chelsea are trying to be extremely careful with Thiago Silva.

Chelsea have no plans to offer Thiago Silva a new contract, according to The Guardian. However, the same outlet has also claimed that the club do not want to disrespect the 39-year-old, one of the greatest defenders of his generation.

He was recently dropped for the Blues’ 3-1 win against Aston Villa in the FA Cup but could return to the starting line-up tomorrow after Benoit Badiashile’s injury.

Silva’s contract, which is worth £110,000 a week (Spotrac), expires in the summer.

He has already hinted that this is likely to be his final season as a Chelsea player.

Chelsea treading carefully with Thiago Silva
It looks like Silva could be slowly phased out of this Chelsea team, perhaps left on the bench often for the rest of the campaign, rather than be excluded from the squad outright.

It would be harsh and disrespectful if he was just kicked to the curb in what could be his final season at the elite level.

As already mentioned, Silva is one of the best defenders this generation has seen. He has also been a very good servant to Chelsea.

The Brazil international has made almost 150 appearances for the club and, of course, helped them to win the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel in 2021.

If Silva really is going out at Chelsea, we hope the club do things properly and in a dignified way. It is the least he deserves.

His Chelsea career does not look to be over just yet, though, especially after Badiashile’s latest injury. If he is out for a while, that is a way back into the team for the former Paris Saint-Germain captain.

Levi Colwill is also another option for the left centre-back position, though the England international has been on the sidelines recently.
