Confirmed: Chelsea 2nd and 3rd January signing on the way

Chelsea plan to follow up the capture of Christian Pulisic by signing a striker and a defender this January transfer window, reports say.

Pulisic arrived from Borussia Dortmund in a £58million deal, but was immediately loaned back to the German side for the remainder of the season.

Maurizio Sarri is eager to add firepower and solidity to his faltering Chelsea side after starting 2019 with a goalless draw with Southampton.

The Mirror claim Chelsea are plotting the addition of a striker and a defender before the end of the month.

Chelsea want to ease the goalscoring burden on Eden Hazard and have been linked with a host of forwards, including Callum Wilson and Gonzalo Higuain.

Bournemouth’s Wilson is the most likely of the targets to join Chelsea and Sarri is also keen for a new defender.

Pulisic may be a big signing, but the American is not a direct replacement for Hazard, as the Belgian continues to be linked with a move to Real Madrid.

Sarri wants to rebuild his Chelsea side, and appealed to the Blues board to acquire him extra firepower this month.

‘On the bench I tried to do my job. I think we played a very good match for 80 metres of the pitch, then we were in trouble in the last 20 metres,’ said Sarri.

‘We have to try to solve the problem of the last 15, 20 metres. ‘The club knows very well my opinion. I think we need something different for characteristics.

‘I’m not in charge of the market. I have to try to improve my players, my team, my offensive phase, or better my offensive phase in the last 20 metres. ‘The club knows my position, my opinion. It’s up to the board.’
