Edouard Mendy finally reveals how Petr Cech ‘secret plans’ lure him to sign for Chelsea
Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has arguably been Chelsea’s best summer signing from last season.
The stopper arrived and helped Chelsea completely change their back line from being very leaky, to becoming a solid unit, and he became the king of clean sheets.
Obviously the addition of Thiago Silva in front of him helped a lot, but Mendy has gone from strength to strength and has been improving all the time as he settled in to his new surroundings.
Mendy was actually scouted by Petr Cech, and he was the one who drove this signing after watching him for some time.
Cech was the one who persuaded Mendy to come to Chelsea as well, according to the man himself in an interview with the UEFA website today.
Cech told Mendy, ‘I only want you’ in conversations convincing him to come to Chelsea, and he was a massive reason behind Mendy arriving.
Mendy said:
“I often spoke to [my agent] who told me about Chelsea’s interest. I tried not to think about it because Chelsea are a pretty big deal and I’d come a really long way, but when the phone conversations started escalating, I realised that there was real interest from Chelsea and that I had to go for it.
“I told myself that Chelsea might sign another goalkeeper, but Petr called me. He said: “Listen, only one goalkeeper is going to sign for the club, and it will be you. I only want you.” When a keeper like Petr, with the career he had and being the Chelsea legend he is, tells you that, it calms you down a bit.”
