Ferdinand gives reasonable Kepa/De Gea comparison

United legend Rio Ferdinand has likened Kepa Arrizabalaga’s struggles to that of Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea after the latter struggled at the start of his Manchester United career.

Kepa has been criticised for his poor form this season and stats even claim that he is the worst in the Premier League this season regarding saves made in relation to shots fired at goal.

However, Rio Ferdinand has backed Kepa to come through and has urged the Chelsea defenders to cover up for the struggling goalkeeper.

“In the early stages, I knew teams were targeting him,” the 41-year-old told BT Sport.

“You could hear teams saying put it on the goalkeeper, team talks were all about David De Gea at that time and you were concerned for him.

“But then it is the responsibility of other people to get you out the muck. Nemanja Vidic, for example, was very good in the air and attacking balls from set-pieces.

He’d go and take responsibility out of the goalkeeper’s hands.”
