Gary Neville names two signings Chelsea needs to make in January to challenge for top 4 “Chelsea not far from challenging for the title”

Gary Neville does not think Chelsea are far away from challenging for the top four.

Chelsea are currently in the bottom half of the table, but speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast yesterday, the Manchester United legend suggested that Mauricio Pochettino’s side could still qualify for the Champions League this season if they strengthen in two areas.

The transfer window, of course, reopens in January, giving Pochettino the chance to do the above.

Chelsea need to strengthen in two positions

Discussing Chelsea’s chances of finishing in the top four, Neville said: “Chelsea are not far away if they got a centre-forward and a centre-half.

“Even though they spent a billion quid, they still need two players.”

Chelsea unlikely to sign a central defender

It would not be a surprise if Chelsea brought in a new striker, with the Blues being heavily linked with a couple of names.

According to 90min, Chelsea have both Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Brentford’s Ivan Toney on their radar ahead of the January transfer window.

However, it is hard to imagine them moving for a new centre-back.

The Blues signed Axel Disasi during the summer, adding the Frenchman to a squad that already had Thiago Silva, Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill, Benoit Badiashile and Trevoh Chalobah before his arrival.

Even if Silva or Chalobah depart next year, for example, Pochettino will still have enough options in central defence. So another centre-half does not look necessary.

When you exclude Silva, it is a young batch of central defenders, but they all seem capable of doing a job, with Fofana and Badiashile both France internationals.
