According to Football Italia, Napoli record goalscorer Dries Mertens is more likely to join Chelsea if he doesn’t extend his Napoli contract.
Mertens will be a free agent at the end of the season and several clubs including Manchester United and Inter Milan have been linked with the Belgian forward.
Mertens is reportedly still considering the proposal of a renewal put forward by Napoli but he will earn more if he makes the move to Stamford Bridge.
The Belgium international will turn 33 next month and is Napoli’s joint all-time record goal-scorer. He has been at Napoli since 2013. Chelsea tried to sign Mertens during the January transfer window and still remain interested in the Belgium international.
Meanwhile, Italian agent Vicenzo Morabito has revealed Chelsea are still in negotiations with the representatives of Napoli striker Dries Mertens.
“Mertens? I believe he will not renew. Chelsea really like him. He could have also gone there in January, but the fact that he didn’t go blocked our negotiation for Giroud’s exit,” Morabito was quoted as saying by CalcioNapoli24.
“As far as I know Chelsea are continuing to deal with Mertens’ lawyers and it is no coincidence the Belgian has not yet renewed [his contract at Napoli].”
