‘He got quick feet’,’ Destroying players’… Jason Cundy impressed by what £50m Chelsea star did against Aston Villa
Jason Cundy singled out Chelsea’s Raheem Sterling for a lot of praise during Friday night’s cup tie against Aston Villa.
Chelsea and Villa couldn’t be separated tonight in the FA Cup fourth round clash, with the game finishing 0-0 after 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge. It means they’ll face off again in a cup replay at Villa Park for a spot in the fifth round.
The Blues qualified for the Carabao Cup final by beating Middlesbrough earlier in the week. Despite a failure to take their chances tonight, Mauricio Pochettino’s side may be creeping in the right direction.
Jason Cundy regularly mentioned Chelsea attacker Raheem Sterling this evening while doing co-commentary on the cup fixture.
He frequently picked out the 29-year-old Blues winger as the brightest spark on the pitch, highlighting his contest against Villa right-back Matty Cash.
“Sterling has got Matty Cash on toast at the minute. He’s showboating. Every pass gets past him, every movement gets past him. Sterling on our left is showboating. Matty Cash has got problems,” Cundy said via Chelsea’s 5th Stand App (8:15pm, 26 January).
He later added (8:21pm): “Sterling is having a good game.”
Cundy then said (9:00pm): “Sterling’s had a good game without really being devastating. You feel if something’s going to come out of this Chelsea side, it may well come from him.”
He added (9:04pm): “He’s got the beating of Cash all evening… Sterling’s feet are so quick.”

Sterling couldn’t quite find the right end product this evening versus Aston Villa, but we’re seeing a lot of signs that he’s rediscovering his best form in the last few appearances.
Some of the English winger’s passing and dribbling tonight looked very dangerous. Unfortunately, his teammates didn’t have their shooting boots on again.
We think £50 million star (Daily Mail) Sterling was a tad unfortunate to be substituted off for the final phase of the game. Similarly, journalist Simon Johnson reported via X that Blues forward Noni Madueke didn’t look happy to be withdrawn from the action during the second-half against Villa.
