‘He’ll keep the squad going! Former Chelsea player reveals who should be Chelsea next captain as Cesar Azpilicueta could leave Chelsea
Cesar Azpilicueta has had limited game time this season as Reece James has made the right wing-back position his own, and he doesn’t seem to be the first choice in the right side of central defence.
However, The Chelsea skipper is in the final year of his contract with Chelsea, and the 32-year-old is yet to sign a new deal with the club.
Meanwhile, according to reports, new Barcelona coach Xavi, is keen on signing up the Chelsea skipper to help the struggling Catalan club, and Cesar may be interested in the deal if a new contract isn’t coming forth at Stamford Bridge.
But, former Chelsea right-back Glen Johnson doesn’t think Chelsea would let go of Azpilicueta, but has tipped Jorginho and Antonio Rudiger to be skippers at the club when Azpilicueta leaves.
“It’s a good question. First of all I don’t think Tuchel will let him go anyway. Azpilucueta’s one of those guys – it’s a strange thing to say – whereby it’s not that he’s happy to not play but he’s the sort of guy who will still do the right things when he’s not playing,” Johnson told Betting Odds.
“He’ll keep the squad going and be there for everyone. Other people would just straight-up sulk and throw their toys out.
“Even though, as I say, I don’t believe they will let him go, if they did, Jorginho or Antonio Rudiger would be good replacement captains, someone like that, someone that the other lads clearly like.
“Rudiger I think would have a lot more to say.”
