Chelsea’s dismissal of former boss Antonio Conte is the most expensive sacking the club has experienced under Roman Abramovich and the most expensive in the English league.
Jose Mourinho’s sacking in his second spell was the most expensive beforehand as the club had to fork out an £19.6m package for the Portuguese. Mourinho’s first dismissal was also massive as the club had to fork out £18m back in 2007.
Chelsea have now confirmed that the pay-off to Antonio Conte and his staff cost the club £26.6m.
However, Conte was sacked on July 13, 2018, just a few days after he and the Chelsea players had returned for pre-season training. He remained out of work until taking over at Inter Milan on May 31 this year.
Conte fought for a huge compensation package as in a Premier League tribunal that was private, and the Italian is thought to have claimed for the £9m in wages he felt he was owed as per the final year that was left on his contract, plus damages for what he felt constituted being prevented from immediately finding another job.
Luiz Felipe Scolari’s £12.6m severance package in 2009 is another huge one the club has engaged in.
In all, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has fired nine permanent managers, paying out a grand total of more than £90m, during his reign at Chelsea.
