“I didn’t’ want him”- Lampard reveals latest new signing he regrets to sign
Kai Havertz was expected to be the star signing in the Chelsea team, after joining with a lot of hype from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.
The 21-year-old was hailed as the next big thing to come out of Germany, which prompted Chelsea to spend around £70m on the young midfielder.
Midway through the season with Chelsea, and Havertz is yet to justify his big money move. Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has played him in several positions but he has so far been unable to perform.
Meanwhile, transfer insider Dean Jones, has gone on to claim on The Si Phillips Talks Chelsea Podcast, that it wasn’t Lampard’s desire to sign Havertz, but that of the Chelsea board.
“Lampard didn’t necessarily want Kai Havertz,” said Jones.
“I’m not saying he would have turned him down but it wasn’t like ‘please go and get me Kai Havertz.’”
Meanwhile, Arsenal legend Alan Smith has blamed Chelsea boss Frank Lampard for Havertz’s struggles at Chelsea.
According to Smith, Lampard has played the German in too many roles and it hasn’t helped his confidence.
Smith told Standard Sport: “Havertz is a little different. Clearly short on confidence, his cause hasn’t been helped by being moved about.
“It seems Lampard can’t quite work out how best to fit the 21-year-old playmaker into Chelsea’s system.”
