Billy Gilmour has made a massive impression on Chelsea fans in recent weeks. The 18-year-old claimed the man of the match award in his two starts against Liverpool and Everton. The youngsters’ abilty has abilty will come as no surprise when considering who his idol is. Gilmour has revealed he bases his game on Spanish midfield great, Andreas Iniesta.
Taking to BBC Sport’s MOTD X, the young Scot told of what he enjoyed most about the Barcelona legend:
“I just loved the way he played, how he got the ball, passing the ball.”
Gilmour told of how he enjoys showing a similar style of play.
“I like to get on the ball, drop deep a lot and create play. I’ve always been told to work hard and everything else will fall in place.”
Gilmour’s recent rise has been something special. It was back in the early part of the season that the youngster appeared in the Carabao Cup, and made his premier league debut, coming off the bench against Sheffield United. It has all come as a surprise to the former Rangers youth product. He added:
“No I never expected it at all, I thought I was going to be in the U23s all season, but I went with the first team in pre-season and did really well.”
Gilmour explained he was delighted to be included, even if it was unexpected.
“We came back and I was training with them a lot, and then the gaffer put me in the squad for the Sheffield game. I was buzzing.”
