“I’m still hungry” – Chelsea forward determined to be main man in attack

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has reiterated his desire to earn his place as Frank Lampard’s first choice centre-forward.

While Giroud was trusted to start the UEFA Super Cup clash with Liverpool, during which he scored as we lost on penalties, Abraham has firmly been elected as Lampard’s main man.

The youngster has repaid the faith that Lampard as shown in him, too, netting four goals in his last two appearances for the Blues. He looks set to keep Giroud out the team.

The World Cup winner hasn’t lost faith of winning that spot back, though. He’s quoted by Le Figario reaffirming that he’s not just here to make up the numbers:

“I’m here to help the new generation, but the retirement time has not come. I’m still hungry and have a lot of ambition. I don’t want to be Chelsea’s No.2 striker, for sure. Just because I’m here as an older brother for young people, it doesn’t mean I’m out on the sidelines.”

Giroud is likely to move on next summer, so of course it makes more sense to give Abraham the minutes. That’s not to say he can’t be useful in cup competitions, however.

He’ll have a role to play, it’s just not clear whether he will be content with how considerable it will be.
