Just in: UEFA makes crucial decision on next Chelsea’s UCL games after EU sanctions Roman Abramovich
On Tuesday, the EU added Abramovich to its updated list of individuals facing an asset freeze and travel bans following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
However, Abramovich is prohibited from making transactions with UK and EU individuals and businesses. Abramovich has also been hit by a travel ban and travel sanctions — meaning he will be refused leave to enter or to remain in the UK and EU.
Meanwhile, according to The Athletic, Chelsea are set to play any remaining home Champions League fixtures behind closed doors after owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the EU.
While season-ticket holders are allowed to attend domestic games at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea will not be allowed to have fans at Stamford Bridge in Champions League games.
A UEFA statement said: “UEFA is fully committed to always implementing relevant EU and international sanctions. Our understanding is that the present case is assessed in the context of the license issued in the UK, which allows Chelsea FC to continue minimum football activity while providing a safeguard that no financial gain will result for Mr Abramovich.
“We will work with the EU and relevant member states to ensure we have full clarity and remain in lockstep with all relevant and applicable measures in line with latest developments.
“UEFA will keep on working closely with, and support, the players, staff and fans of Chelsea during these difficult times to allow them to represent their colours on the pitch.”
