On reflection, Chelsea were having a relatively good season until the Premier League was suspended.
While there were undoubtedly some low points, most fans would’ve happily settled for fourth place at the beginning of the season, given the loss of Eden Hazard and the club’s transfer ban during the summer.
Frank Lampard, inexperienced himself as a manager, has been forced to rely on youngsters, and injuries have deprived him of his best senior players for much of the campaign. Context, then, has rendered Lampard’s first season an acceptable one, but there will be no excuses next season.
Many expect the Blues to go big on transfers in the summer to make up for time lost in the last two windows.
Even though their ban was lifted before January, Chelsea still failed to sign anyone and Lampard was critical of the club’s hierarchy for failing to strengthen.
It showed that while the Blues have perhaps over-achieved this season, the boss knows his side need dramatic personnel improvements if they want to challenge Liverpool at the top of the table.
