Master of penalties! Werner breaks long-term Eden Hazard penalty record

Timo Werner may not be getting the goals for Chelsea, but the German international is definitely proving to be a valuable member of the team.

Werner hasn’t scored in his last 14 Premier League games, and he has also netted only 1 goal in his last 19 games, but he has been valuable nevertheless.

Werner won back to back penalties for Chelsea to help us to victories against Tottenham and Sheffield United, and the German international is indeed proving to be a king in the art of winning penalties.

According to stats by Squawka, Werner has won 4 penalties this season in the Premier League – that is the most for a Chelsea player since the 2016/17 season! It doesn’t end there; he has also won 7 penalties for Chelsea in all competitions so far this season.

For his lack of goals, these are extraordinary stats.

Meanwhile, ex-Liverpool captain Graeme Souness slammed Werner for winning his side a penalty at the expense of the goalkeeper’s safety.

“He makes no attempt to avoid the goalkeeper coming in, he could have damaged the goalkeeper big time there,” Souness said on Sky Sports.

“He’s run into him because he sees he has overhit it and he’s not getting the ball and he’s just touched. He could have really damaged the goalkeeper here. Fortunately for the goalkeeper it wasn’t the kneecap that caught him, it was his thigh.

“I don’t know what to say about penalties and referees anymore,” he added. “I hate using ‘the modern game’ it suggests we are playing a totally different game nowadays. I’l put it this way, that is the kind of play that has crept into our football.

“People will call it cute, simulation… he’s ran into him today. And the biggest problem I have with that is he made no attempt to avoid the goalkeeper, he ran into him and he could have badly damaged him.

“If he’d caught him with his knee [Ramsdale] would have been in hospital. Fortunately, he caught him with his thigh. You can call it cute, I see it as really dangerous play.”
