Mauro Icardi to Chelsea: Agent and Inter boss issue update on striker’s contract talks

Mauro Icardi’s future remains a topic of much conversation in Italy.

The Argentinian striker has enjoyed a brilliant season in Serie A, scoring nine goals in 20 games.

However, he had nine goals in 13 games as he has not found the back of the net in his last seven league appearances – his worst spell since joining the club in 2013.

Those seven games have all been since there has been speculation surrounding his future, with talks over a new deal at the San Siro reportedly stalling, and suggestions that a number of Europe’s top clubs were interested in signing him.

football.london ran a transfer survey in the build up to and during the January transfer window and Icardi was named as the Chelsea supporters’ dream January signing.

And while it did not come off, with Gonzalo Higuain joining on loan instead, there is nothing to say that Icardi will not be on the Blues wishlist come the summer.

And if contract talks with Inter continue to go nowhere, Chelsea could indeed be one of the clubs chasing his signature.

Inter boss Luciano Spalletti has told the club to make a deal happen for the sake of the first team and Icardi’s fortunes.

He is quoted as saying after the narrow win over Parma at the weekend as saying: “Mauro is evidently seeing his performance affected by some situations that have been going on recently.

“He needs to free himself from the talk that is around him. The directors agreed to start talking about the contract, so now they need to go there and conclude it.”

Icardi’s agent is his wife Wanda Nara, who has also been discussing the situation.

Speaking to Tiki Taka, she said: “I’d like to see Mauro more protected by the club because sometimes nasty things have come out from inside.

“The priority is Inter, I’ve never demanded a renewal. We’re in no hurry, he still has two years left on his contract.”
