New Manager, New Striker As Chelsea Move Closer To First Signing

Chelsea are ready to confirm Sarri’s signature as their next manager in coming days after all issues have been thrashed by both parties.

The Blues have been in lengthy discussion with the former Napoli manager before he was replaced by the Serie A giants last month.

Once he’s unveiled as the Blues manager, the Italian is expected to get new striker who will perfectly sub-in as Morata’s replacement ahead of the upcoming season.

Report from the Daily Telegraph claims that Napoli forward Dries Mertens will be the first striker to be signed by the Blues this summer.

The British publication revealed that Sarri is not contended with what he saw from Alvaro Morata last season, so he won’t be solely relying on the Spaniard for goals.

Dries Mertens was a winger during his early days at the Napolitano Stadium but he was converted to a centre-forward by Maurizio Sarri to bring the best out of the Belgian’s overall display.

Since the Belgian was deployed as a striker, his game performance has been one with a lot of goals and assists.

Mertens was directly involved in 83 goals having played just 94 matches in all competitions over the course of two seasons. He was also lively throughout last season, helping the team mount huge pressure on their arch-rivals Juventus for the Serie A trophy.

At 31, Mertens experiences and goalscoring abilities are surely one of the drives that would be needed by Sarri to produce something tangible in his debut season at Stamford Bridge.
