In an unexpected turn of events, Davide Zappacosta has signed a new Chelsea deal before joining Serie A side AS Roma on a six-month loan on Wednesday.
The Italian’s new contract now runs until 2022 and his long-term Stamford Bridge future is set to assessed in January onсe his Roma loan spell comes to an end.
An official statement from the club reads: “Davide Zappacosta has signed a one-year extension to his contract at Chelsea and moved to Roma on loan until the end of January.”
The full-back is still likely to leave the Blues next summer as Cesar Azpilicueta and young Reece James are ahead of him in the pecking order.
However, the 27-year-old’s new deal ensures that Chelsea’s negotiation stance will not be weakened by a player entering the final year of his contract.
