Mendy: Comfortable afternoon for the Senegal international. Made some important saves and did well to command his area and pick up aerial balls when needed. Made one good anticipation in the first half to anticipate and grab a ball quickly to curb a Newcastle attack. 7/10

Reece James: Shook off a little knock in the game and was solid at right-back. Went forward when needed and put in a couple of inviting crosses into the box. Kept Allan Saint-Maximin quiet. 7/10

Zouma: Solid game from the Frenchman. Had one header that almost went into the net from a Mason Mount corner. Very assured at the back. 7.5/10

Rudiger: Very solid game from the German. Came on for Thiago Silva for his first start of the season, and he did well. Made one fine block to stop Saint-Maximin’s effort. 7.5/10

Chilwell: He’s always a willing runner, and one of such runs forced Fernandez into an own goal for Chelsea’s first. Was always an available outlet on the left flank. 7/10

Kante: Captain on the day, and what a great job he did in the middle of the park. We are now beginning to see the best of the Frenchman. Made a number of steals and interceptions and always at the right place to curb any Newcastle attack. 8/10

Kovacic: Beside one loose pass that gave Newcastle a counter in the first half, he had a very good game. Was good on the ball, very mobile and linked up well with the forward players. 7/10

Mount: The young midfielder was class today, and was just unfortunate not to get a goal late on for his fine performance. Created the first goal with a brilliant ball in across the face of goal from the right. 7.5/10

Ziyech: Started the game in remarkable form. One superb cross from the right saw Karl Darlow tip over Tammy Abraham’s header. Brilliant passing as usual. Seemed to have tired out in the second half before he was subbed off. 7/10

Werner: He was uncharacteristically wasteful today, but was still one of the best players on the pitch. Very electric performance, and nice run to assist Tammy Abraham for Chelsea’s second. 7/10

Abraham: Good game from the front man. Did well upfront as he tested the goalkeeper with a header in the first half. His runs and movement were also good, and scored Chelsea’s second with relative ease. 8/10

Subs: Hudson-Odoi: Looked lively after coming on for Timo Werner in the 76th minute.

Emerson: Had eight minutes of action after replacing Chilwell.

Giroud: Late sub for Ziyech. Still got a good chance which was ruled out for offside.
