Jorginho took a while to shake away the ‘Maurizio Sarri’s lackey‘ tag off him. The midfielder has thrived even after the appointment of Frank Lampard continuing his performances from the previous season. Even, the Blues’ fans finally started appreciating his value in the team.
Sarri left Chelsea to join Juventus in the summer of 2019 and with him followed the transfer links for Jorginho. The Italian football coach had brought his compatriot to Stamford Bridge. There were rumors that he wanted to reunite with him in Turin. Though Jorginho snubbed his former coach to stay in London, the transfer links have persisted.
But Jorginho’s stay at Chelsea is doubted to last very long in spite of the midfielder playing a pivotal role in Frank Lampard’s side. The holding midfielder may end up leaving Stamford Bridge sooner than most fans think given his age and continuous links regarding a return to Italy. Jorginho’s role is crucial in Lampard’s system and the Blues’ gaffer will require a player with similar attributes to replace him.
Chelsea already has a strong midfield this season and hence Lampard will not go into the transfer market. There are other positions that require more emphasis than the midfield. Lampard would not want to move on from Jorginho for next season, but if he did he would look towards youth once again.
Billy Gilmour resembles Jorginho mostly in terms of playing style. The young midfielder is confident on the ball and possesses excellent positional awareness. The 18-year-old is a good passer of the ball and often looks to play them forward. This is something Jorginho has been continually criticized for not doing enough. Gilmour’s work is impressive off the ball too as he constantly tracks dribbles that get in behind the defense.
His excellent performances against Liverpool and Everton showed the true potential of Gilmour. The young Scott expected to go out on a loan spell. Yet Lampard kept him as part of the first-team squad and eventually promoted him to the senior side. There is not much doubt about Gilmourbeing part of that squad again next season. Gilmour has the versatility needed either in the Jorginho role or playing more forward as the front three.
