Football in the Premier League has been suspended since March 9 due to the coronavirus pandemic, and there’s yet to be a confirmed date as to when the Premier League will resume.
However, talks about the league being played behind closed doors have come up, and health expert says coronavirus could see stadiums being restricted for one and a half year.
Dr Zach Binney, an epidemiologist at the Emory University in Atlanta, says filling stadiums could pose a major threat if the virus isn’t yet totally eradicated.
“[It] could be a little more, could be a little less,” he told the Times, adding that he is “as close to 100 per cent as I’ve ever been that we cannot return to filled-to-capacity stadia until we have a vaccine.”
He explains: “Every person you add to a gathering adds risk. Five people is more dangerous than two, 10 is more dangerous than five, 500 is more dangerous than 10, 60,000 is very, very dangerous.
“Even if you have really low community-based transmission, it only takes a few people in that crowd of 60,000 for there to be a risk of something very significant happening.”
