Roberto Di Matteo predicts where Chelsea will finish in the Premier League after 4-4 draw against Manchester City ‘I trust my Chelsea on this’
Former Chelsea player and manager Roberto Di Matteo says he can’t see his former club finishing in the top four.
Speaking to DAZNbet.com, Di Matteo claimed that, while a top-six position is still a possibility, securing Champions League qualification was not a realistic ambition for the Blues:
“I think Chelsea can finish in the top six. Top four is probably a bridge too far.”
Just looking at the Premier League table, most supporters would probably agree with Di Matteo’s assessment of the situation at the moment.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men are currently 10 points off Tottenham in fourth place after only 12 games played. They are also still 5 points adrift of Manchester United in sixth but the Red Devils are not exactly playing well, despite some recent victories, and the feeling is that they can be caught.
Chelsea are showing signs of progress
Winning just 4 of the opening 12 league matches is not what many had hoped for when Pochettino was appointed, but they have already shown they can compete against the best teams in the country, despite the manager only being in charge for a matter of months.
They may have drawn against the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City but there is a case to say they could have easily won any of those three games.
Finding consistency is the key for Pochettino
This squad has shown they can perform well in one-off games, but it is now essential that they start producing those sorts of performances, week in, week out.
If they are to climb above midtable between now and the end of the season, a level of consistency must be found. That has to start now with games against Newcastle, Brighton and Manchester United coming up after the international break. Fans need to see that the Blues can pick up results over an extended to be confident in this group of players.
