“Skill-wise, one of the best players on earth” – Frank Leboeuf excited Chelsea close to sign €40 million World class player
Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf says his former club will have one of the most talented players “on earth” if they sign Ryan Cherki from Lyon.
The Blues are believed to be considering a move for the player but, although Leboeuf says he is a big fan of his compatriots, he is concerned about his lack of experience:
“Skill-wise, one of the best players already on earth. 20 years old, unbelievable. The guy can do everything. But he still has to improve and is young. When he has to get rid of the ball, it’s always half a second too early or half a second too late. I have no doubt that he’s going to improve. I think it’s a good investment, but I’m not sure he’s the kind of player Chelsea needs right now. They need experienced players. They don’t need the future. They need the present.”
Lyon are believed to be reluctant to lose one of their best players, but it has been reported in France that they could be open to selling for around €50 million (£43 million).
Chelsea has been interested in Chelkie for a long time
The London club’s pursuit of the 19-year-old was fruitless. It was said back in December last year that the player was being targeted along with teammates Malo Gusto and Castelo Lukeba.
Earlier this month, reports began circulating that the Blues were considering ramping up their interest in Czerki. It has now also emerged that Mauricio Pochettino’s side have held talks with the players’ union.
Other attacking midfielders are being considered
Besides Cherki, Chelsea are known to be interested in Celta Vigo’s Gabri Veiga. The Spaniard will be cheaper as he has a release clause of €40m (£34m), but there could also be significant competition for his signature.
Currently, Cherki seems to be the preferred choice, and based on Leboeuf’s comments, supporters should be happy that the Frenchman could visit.
