“So bad of him” – Petr Cech reveals who to blame for Chelsea struggling
Petr Cech has pointed a finger at Todd Boehly as the person responsible for Chelsea’s struggles over the last two years.
Boehly took over ownership of Chelsea in 2022 after former owner, Roman Abramovich was forced to relinquish the club as part of sanctions from the UK for his ties to the Russian government.
Since taking over from Abramovich, Boehly has spent over £1b on transfers, while changing the recruitment strategy of the West London club. But despite this, Chelsea have continued to struggle for consistency after finishing the 2022-23 Premier League season in 12th place.
Some outlets recently reported that some Chelsea stars haven’t been impressed with the situation of the club, and now regret signing long term contracts at Stamford Bridge.
Cech worked as Chelsea’s Technical and Performance Advisor under Abramovich before exiting the position in June 2022, and the former goalkeeper has now explained why he thinks the Blues haven’t made real progress under their new ownership.
“The takeover itself is a big change,” Cech told Sky Sports.
“You have a new owner with a new vision, a new style, a new way they want the club to be run.
“That takes some adaptation, it includes the players and everybody working for the club. These things take time. The team was built a certain way but since I’ve left, there was a complete remake of the squad and it’s challenging for everybody when you have a lot of changes.
“Some of the players probably came in with huge expectations, with a lot of money being spent of them, which creates even more pressure. When the results aren’t there, this squad is really young and I think they sometimes find it hard to live up to those expectations.
“Looking at the games over the last month, you don’t see the spine or the core of the team.
“The goalkeeper has been changing, the defence has been changing, the midfield and attacking players are changing too.
“That shows there is a lot of potential, but the coaches haven’t found the right formula yet to find the core that would stabilise and than you fill in the other players.”
