The Atlletico striker came on for the last 20 minutes of his team’s 1-0 Champions League win over Liverpool, having left Stamford Bridge in January 2018.

Atletico Madrid were one a rare amount of teams to record a win over Liverpool this season.

The Spanish side recorded a 1-0 win over the runaway league leaders in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie, with midfielder Saul Niguez’s early goal proving to be the difference between the two teams as Liverpool were unable to break down the famous Atletico defence.

It was just Liverpool’s third defeat in all competitions so far this season, after a defeat to Napoli in the group stage and a loss to Aston Villa in the EFL Cup quarter final.

Atletico will now look to hold onto the advantage in the second leg at Anfield in a few weeks. Former Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata was named in the starting lineup for Atletico at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, but it was another ex-Chelsea man who entered the field in the second half who had Blues’ fans talking.

Diego Costa played the final 20 minutes of the game after replacing Vitolo. The Spaniard has scored two goals and provided three assists in 16 appearances so far this season.

The 31-year-old made 120 appearances for the Blues between summer 2014 and January 2018, scoring 58 goals and providing 24 assists.

His appearance for Atletico against Liverpool had Chelsea fans thinking ‘what if’.
