‘They are mentally tired, might bench them! Tuchel reveals 3 key Chelsea players are tired ahead of Malmo clash
Ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Malmo on Wednesday night, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has revealed that some of his players are drained due to the enormous amount of games they have to play for club and country.
Tuchel has listed the trio of Jorginho, Mason Mount and Romelu Lukaku as three Chelsea players who have played in too many games this year.
The Blues boss opted against starting Mount and Jorginho in the Premier League game against Brentford, and he’s also harbouring thoughts of resting Lukaku for the game against Malmo.
Tuchel said of Lukaku: “I think in the very moment, it’s my opinion, I feel Romelu is a bit like overplayed. I think he played too many competitions over the summer, too many competitions with the national team, now he played the Nations League.”
He then said of Mount and Jorginho: “The next international break is coming but this is what I feel, particularly for him. Some other players too, for me it’s the same a bit like for Mason [Mount] and Jorginho – they struggle, they have a lot of weight to carry for their countries and they take it and they love it and they are competitors.
“And if you like it or not, if you play a thousand matches a year, it can feel a bit heavy although they love the game and they are such good guys. But this is what I feel between the lines.”
