“Very clear in the race” – Fabrizio Romano gives update on €80m winger Chelsea wants to sign

We’re finally approaching Fabrizio Romano’s season, after he patiently waited the entire season. He recently released an exclusive for Caught Offside that is jam-packed with details about Xavi Simons, one of the hottest artists available this summer.

After an incredible breakthrough season with RB Leipzig, the young midfield player has some major decisions to make this summer. Owned by Paris Saint-Germain, it’s possible that going back to the parent company is his next sensible step.

Romano doesn’t have much to offer Chelsea supporters who are expecting to make a big impression and try to convince one more of the greatest and brightest players in Europe to visit Stamford Bridge.

“Despite links with Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain will decide on Xavi Simons’ future at the end of the season, conversations will take place in the next weeks,” Romano wrote in his column of the €80m valued star.

“Nothing is concrete at this stage, I’m told; Leipzig told PSG that they’d love to keep Xavi on loan for one more year, but it’s up to PSG now and I’m told the player will also be involved in the decision.”

Chelsea invested heavily recently in Mykhailo Mudryk, Raheem Sterling and Noni Madueke, plus they have players like Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku capable of playing wide. It’s really hard to see them investing in another premium price option unless they sell one of those players, and it’s really hard to see them getting an acceptable offer for any of those players.

Any dreams of signing a new winger – especially one of Simons’ calibre – just feels fanciful right now. There’s very little, if anything, we can offer him right now that would tempt him. He’s got two great options on the table – staying with Leipzig to develop or going to the next step with PSG.
