Why Chelsea must keep Giroud at the club next season

Olivier Giroud was third choice striker at the club for most part of the season, as he found himself behind Tammy Abraham and Michy Batshuayi in the pecking order.

The Frenchman was billed to leave the club in January, with Inter Milan strongly interested, but the Blues blocked the deal from happening as Chelsea couldn’t sign up a replacement in January. Giroud went on to start four straight games for Chelsea and was a top act, scoring two goals.

Giroud has proven himself to the manager Frank Lampard, and with his contract set to end this season, the Blues could be interested in keeping him for another season.

According to Nicolo Schira, Giroud’s agent Michael Manuello is in talks with Chelsea over a new contract for his client. Schira however claimed that Marina Granovskaia would only favour a one-year deal for the World Cup winner.

Giroud admitted last month that he didn’t expect to be at Chelsea until the end of the season.

Speaking to French outlet Telefoot, Giroud said: “To be honest, I saw myself playing elsewhere.

“I had six tough months, which is why I wanted a change of scene to get back to playing and enjoying myself on the pitch, so I tried to leave in January.”
