Why I can’t spend like Roman Abramovich – Todd Boehly finally reveals

Chelsea are yet to acquire a player this summer, despite the fact that Liverpool and Manchester City have already spent significant sums on new forwards.

Todd Boehly, the new owner of Chelsea, has stated that he will be careful with the club’s resources.

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly has stated that he will not spend as the club did under Roman Abramovich due to the possibility of punishment if UEFA’s financial fair play guidelines are broken.

Boehly said at the SuperReturn International conference in Berlin: “Financial fair play is starting to get some teeth and that will limit the ability to acquire players at any price.

“UEFA takes it seriously and will continue to take it seriously. [More teeth] means financial penalties and disqualification from sporting competitions.”

Meanwhile, former Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips has told Chelsea to splash  Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.

For Wright-Phillips, Chelsea should make a move for Lewandowski, as he’d always guarantee goals.

Romelu Lukaku who was signed for £97.5m struggled to bang in the goals last season, with 15 goals in all competitions.

Wright-Phillips told Genting Casino: “No matter what team Robert Lewandowski plays in, he always finds a way to score a goal and he’d be the perfect replacement for Romelu Lukaku but Chelsea would still need to play to his strengths in order to make it work.”
