5 Chelsea transfers likely to happen this January
Chelsea had an excellent summer in the transfer window and Blues boss Frank Lampard can be more than happy with what the board gave him. If there are any complaints it would be that he has been left with a rather large squad due to not being able to off-load some of the squad players.
The pandemic has played a big part in that, with the summer being far from ideal as a selling market. But Chelsea may look to try again in January to offload some of the players even if it will be just on loan. Due to the fact that they bought so well, I wouldn’t expect too many arrivals in the winter, although a lot can depend on who they manage to sell, or loan out.
However, below are 5 deals I believe to be likely this January regardless…
Declan Rice: The West Ham midfielder was wanted Frank Lampard in the summer, but Chelsea were unable to sell the players and make the room to get the funds and space available to pull it off. But Chelsea will go back in for Rice this January, and I’d expect the player to be a little more vocal about wanting the move this time around.
Marcos Alonso: Emerson Palmieri seems to be Lampard’s second choice, meaning that it is almost certain that Alonso will be departing in January, most likely on loan.
Olivier Giroud: Giroud wants to be playing a lot more than the 33 minutes given to him so far this season. He has an eye on the Euros for France this summer, and will surely ask to leave again this January as a result.
Kepa Arrizabalaga: As with Giroud, Kepa will want to play for Spain in the Euros this summer, and I don’t believe he has much chance of that without gaining regular first team football, and to do that he must leave Chelsea. With Petr Cech coming out of retirement, I believe this has left the door open for Kepa to be loaned out this winter.
Fikayo Tomori: Will probably be regretting his late decision to stay at Chelsea and turn down a loan move to West Ham, because he has since become 4th/5th choice centre back for Lampard. I believe there to be issues off the field that has not sat well with Lampard, but I don’t think this is his Chelsea career over – I believe he will go on loan this January though.
