Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is a top goalkeeper and definitely one of the best in the world.
However, the German is now 34 and in the final phase of his career. Neuer is close to the final year of his contract with Bayern, and wants a five-year renewal, which Bayern aren’t willing to offer him.
Chelsea have been linked with a move for Neuer as Blues boss Frank Lampard doesn’t seem to trust Kepa Arrizabalaga yet, after the Spaniard seemed to have struggled for most parts of the season. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich and German legend Lothar Matthaus believes Manuel Neuer is set for the exit door at Bayern Munich
“I can understand his desire for security and a long contract very well but five years is also a long time,” Matthaus told Sky Deutschland.
“He should not forget how loyal FC Bayern was to him in every phase. For both sides, it would be wonderful if Manuel stays a few years more.
“He should first extend for three years and if he’s still healthy and performs he’ll get the next contract. “I think the signs are pointing to his departure.”
Matthaus added: “He wants to play. He wants to play more often and longer. In light of his quality, that’s understandable.
“Probably a little more was expected of him and the expectations he put on himself were undoubtedly higher. I don’t think that he will still be playing in Munich next season.”
