The date and time for our Carabao Cup third round tie has now been confirmed. The Blues will face Barnsley at Stamford Bridge next Wednesday, 23 September, with the kick-off time at 7.45pm.
The Tykes have beaten fellow Championship opponents Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough on their way to this stage without conceding a goal. They defeated Middlesborough 2-0 in the previous round to get to the third round of the Carabao Cup.
Their 2-0 win at Boro’s Riverside Stadium on Tuesday evening was sealed by goals from Patrick Schmidt and Jordan Williams, while former Chelsea Academy goalkeeper Bradley Collins performed well between the posts.
This will be the first meeting between Chelsea and Barnsley since an FA Cup tie in 2008 when the hosts pulled off a shock 1-0 scoreline to beat Chelsea at Oakwell. Kayode Odejayi’s second-half header gave Barnsley a shocking 1-0 victory, which was the last time the two teams met in any competition.
In the last meeting at Stamford Bridge, which was a league clash, Gianluca Vialli and Mark Hughes netted in a 2-0 victory for the Blues.
