Crystal Palace have had a fine start to the season, as they defeated Manchester United 3-1 in their second game of the campaign.
After a goalless first half, Chelsea turned the gear in the second half and went on to win the game 4-0.
Palace boss Roy Hodgson had set up his side to frustrate Chelsea on the break, but were not afforded any of such opportunity.
Speaking after the game, Hodgson hailed Chelsea’s display and admitted there were lessons learnt from the game.
Asked if the result was hard to take, Hodgson said: “Well all defeats are difficult to take. When you get beaten this heavily, four goals to nil, it’s even harder.
“In the first half I thought we defended extremely well, and I must say I didn’t see them scoring four goals in the second half if we continued to play at that rate.
“Unfortunately it was a day where we gifted goals by individual defensive errors. Of course it’s very hard to come over that. Certainly three of four were maybe down to errors you hope your defenders aren’t going to make.”
He added: “But we must give Chelsea some credit in that respect, of course, because they did extremely well and made it difficult to get that passing and movement that we wanted.”
Asked the lessons he learnt from the game, Hodgson said: “Don’t make individual mistakes at the back, because that tends to cost you goals. But I don’t think that’s a particularly new lesson to learn.
“To make certain that we show more confidence in ourselves when we have a chance to break out. Get our foot on the ball and take advantage of that and show necessary belief in our skills when that type of situation occurs.
“But otherwise, I’m afraid there’s nothing to learn from it other than the fact that defeats are painful, and some are even more painful.”
