Chelsea set an ‘Incredible’ record in the Champions League following late win against Rennes

The same way Chelsea did early business during the summer transfer window, the Blues have also recorded early success in the Champions League this season.

Chelsea became the first team this season to advance to the next round of the Champions League, following a 2-1 win against Rennes.

Thanks to a late header from Olivier Giroud, Chelsea sealed passage to the next round of the tournament, with two games to spare.

Chelsea were joined by Sevilla, who also qualified after a late winner from the Spanish side ensured a 2-1 win against Krasnodar.

Rennes and Krasnodar remain on 1 point each, making it mathematically impossible for either side to overtake Chelsea or Sevilla.

Chelsea maintain top of the table with a superior goal difference, but the Blues and Sevilla will now have to fight to finish top of the group.

Juventus and Barcelona also sealed passage to the next round of the competition, with two games left to play.

Speaking after the game against Rennes, Lampard said: “I’m very happy to qualify with two games to spare. It was a really tough match for us tonight, Rennes are a very good team. We played well for big spells of the game. It was a tough, had-fought win.”
