Lampard reveals his ‘incredible’ plan for Werner and Pulisic ahead of Man City clash
The last time the two sides met, Chelsea won the game courtesy of goals from Christian Pulisic and Willian, as Chelsea were 2-1 victors on the day.
To win that game, the Blues produced some breathtaking counterattacking moves to dismantle a City side that were intent on passing the ball around the pitch.
Chelsea have a good home record against City in the compact Stamford Bridge pitch, and the plan in recent years have always been to hit City hard on the break.
Chelsea will be aiming for a third successive home league win against Man City for the first time since 2006-2009, when we managed four in a row, and Lampard is banking on Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic to provide the threat on the breaks.
Speaking ahead of the game, Lampard said: “City will be a different game but we are a possession-based team and we usually have the lion’s share of possession.
“We have generally found some low-block teams against us over the last period that we haven’t broken down well enough when actually we were earlier in the season so there are little tweaks we need to make to that.
On Werner, he said: “Timo’s attributes can be very powerful on the counter-attack but there are lots of things that we need in the game against Manchester City on and off the ball. He’s always a huge weapon on that and I think he will become a huge weapon against low blocks as well.”
