Kai Havertz reveals his favoured position to play at Chelsea
The arrival of Kai Havertz caused huge hype among Chelsea fans. The German international was at the top of his game for Bayer Leverkusen and signing such a top player was big news. But unlike what the Chelsea supporters were hoping for, Havertz was unable to play at his best for the Blues.
Chelsea signed Kai on a club-record fee of £70m last summer. Being the club’s most valuable recruit, he was expected to outperform their expectations. However, Havertz had a very troubling start to his career at Chelsea. The German international was unable to play at the same level as he used to in the Bundesliga.
Kai Havertz was starting to catch up with the new life when he came in contact with the coronavirus. This left him under isolation and treatment for a long while. Havertz made a rush back to join his Chelsea-mates once he was cured. But missing two weeks of training due to self-isolation and treatment had an impact on his fitness.
But Frank Lampard did not bench him due to his lack of fitness. Instead gave him enough game-time and also helped him gain his confidence back. Yet he wasn’t performing at his best on the pitch. Many claimed that Havertz’s lack of performance was because Lampard was playing him in the wrong position. But Kai made a recent statement clearing that accusation.
Havertz-‘I can play anywhere!’
Frank Lampard has tried to play Kai Havertz in many attacking roles since his arrival. The Chelsea manager has played as a no.10, no.8, and along with the wings. But Havertz was just the average player in all of those roles. Whereas Kai was a top performer in all attacking roles for Bayer Leverkusen.
Many fans made claims that Lampard was using him incorrectly on the pitch. And that he needed to have a proper role in the squad to root for himself. But Kai Havertz recently cleared this by saying that he is comfortable in any attacking role. And that all he demands is to get proper game-time on the pitch.
The sole reason for his lack of form is likely to be his fitness problems. The German midfielder is not in his best physical form and hence this results in his game. He may find his form in time and Chelsea are providing him time at the moment. But he must catch up soon or it may be too late for him.
Chelsea was able to secure a win on Sunday after some drawbacks in their previous three games. The Blues defeated Morecambe in the FA Cup. Kai Havertz was able to find the net as well as provide an assist. Maybe this will be a turning point for Frank’s side, and for Havertz individually.
