BREAKING: Premier league clubs ‘fear this season could be over’ after latest announcement on Monday

Several games have been postponed already in recent weeks due to Covid-19 outbreak. Manchester United’s game against Brentford on Tuesday was postponed. Tottenham’s matches against Rennes and Brighton were called off last week.

Leicester and Norwich considered postponing their games against Newcastle and Manchester United respectively last weekend before going ahead.

However, according to Daily Mail, Premier League clubs are fearful of mass postponements and the potential need for another shutdown due to the rapid spread of Omicron and their slow progress in vaccinating players.

42 positive tests for Covid was announced on Monday night and that is the most recorded on a single week.

Several clubs are questioning if they can carry on in the event of mass postponements, especially due to the congested fixture period during winter.

One solution is to extend the season into the summer, as happened previously but this would be problematic due to the 2022 Word Cup taking place in November and December.

The Premier League insist that with rigorous testing measures and emergency protocols in place, the season should be able to continue. Clubs are also braced to be asked to perform daily Covid tests on players, after checks were upped to three times a week on Friday.
