Chelsea complete another signing of Canadian international defender on a three-year deal

After her contract with current club Lyon expires on July 1, Buchanan will join Chelsea on a free transfer. The Olympic gold medalist’s move to Kingsmeadow comes as no surprise, given the recent increase in transfer rumours.

Before joining recent club Lyon in 2017, the centre-back spent her early years of her career with Toronto Lady Lynx, Ottawa Fury, and Vaughan Azzurri in her native Canada. Buchanan has appeared in 130 games for Lyon, scoring nine goals and winning 13 trophies, including five UEFA Women’s Champions Leagues and five league titles.

On the international level, Buchanan was a member of Bev Priestman’s gold-winning Canada squad in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. At senior level, the player has received 118 caps for her country.

After completing her move to Chelsea, Buchanan said “I am coming to Chelsea with the same ambition I always had – win trophies and become the best in the world. The club has everything in order for us to compete in every competition and it’s time to bring a Champions League trophy to London.

“I’m hoping to bring my experience to the team and continue on the successful pathway that the club has been on for the past seasons. I can’t wait to join my new teammates and the coaching staff on this journey.”

Buchanan becomes Chelsea’s second new signing of the summer transfer window.
