Former Chelsea players warn Tuchel against signing €70M attacker
Chelsea is reported to be interested in signing Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling.
Pep Guardiola has judged the 27-year-old wideman replaceable, and Thomas Tuchel is said to be a fan of the player.
However, two former Chelsea players, Frank Leboeuf and Craig Burley, believe Sterling isn’t the type of player the club requires right now.
“If you have Sterling at his best, no doubt that it’s a plus,” former Chelsea defender Burley, told ESPN.
“But what kind of player Chelsea would get I don’t know. Definitely he’s a fantastic player and can bring something special.
“That’s not going to resolve the problems Chelsea have, I think in terms of scoring goals and bringing the confidence back to all the players.
“What it’s not going to resolve as well is the crosses from the two wings, by Reece James and [Ben Chilwell].
“It’s going to be tricky if they don’t find somebody who can head the ball because neither Sterling nor Werner, Pulisic or even Mount are capable of giving something special from crosses. Maybe Havertz can but it’s not enough in the squad.”
Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley also shares similar belief with Leboeuf about the signing of Raheem Sterling.
“If this deal does happen, are Chelsea just trying to overload themselves with similar players?” added Burley.
“I know he can play across the front line but so can Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech to an extent, Hudson-Odoi, Mason Mount. Timo Werner is a striker but he plays predominantly on the left side.
“It just adds to the five or six players they’ve already got that can do similar things. Now can he do it better? He has done recently – but he’s been playing in a much better side. That helps.
“It won’t answer all the questions, this would be one piece of a jigsaw that’s still missing three or four pieces before they’re even close to City and Liverpool.”
