Chelsea are looking to make a surprise bid for Freiburg striker Luca Waldschmidt when the transfer window reopens, according to the Sun.

The Blues have been tracking the 23-year-old since his impressive displays for Germany’s Under 21s at last summer’s European Championships and they are said to be lining up a £20m offer. It is fair to say to the German international hasn’t really set the world alight with his performances at senior level so far. He has 16 goals in 95 Bundesliga games.

However, Waldschmidt’s record this season, scoring six goals in 15 appearances, is not a bad return considering he has started only nine league matches and was sidelined for a month with a knee injury.

The Sun reports that manager Frank Lampard believes the German can improve into a top-class player, and with his past track record of bringing through young talent, he will know better than most.

Fans on Twitter are not sure what to make of the club’s interest in Waldschmidt:

@KingWicksey: Another batshuayi!
@Ian75547800: Get him in
@DanCFC1996: His stats are rubbish
@ScottyA_: Golden Boot at U21 Euro’s for Germany but not quite worked out for him since… gotta be a 3rd choice striker if we signed him
